Board your Turnagain Arm Shuttle for the guided drive along spectacular Turnagain Arm. From beginning to end there are dramatic views of mountain scenery and the Cook Inlet. At the 140-acre Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, jaws drop in awe-even those of longtime Alaskans. AWCC’s mission is to provide refuge for orphaned, injured and injured animals-those that can’t survive in the wild. The center also educates visitors about Alaska’s Wildlife. Your shuttle will take you directly to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center where you can witness Alaskan Wildlife up-close. On the way down to the Alaska Wildlife Center you will be traveling down Alaska’s most scenic highway known as Turnagain Arm.

This tour offers three departures daily with various times to spend in Portage Valley and time to take the cruise.
Get out of the city of Anchorage and take the Turnagain Arm Shuttle to the Portage Glacier Cruise. This self-guided Portage Glacier Cruise is truly idea for the independent traveler. Your shuttle will take you directly to Portage Glacier Lodge at Portage Valley where you can enjoy a meal and enjoy stunning hiking trails like the Trail of Blue Ice and Byron Glacier Trail. After or before you take in the sites of Portage valley, you can take the one-hour cruise on Portage Lake up to the face of Portage Glacier.
Begich Boggs Visitor Center
The visitor center is on Portage Lake and has observation decks and telescopes. Prior to the Portage Glacier retreat it would offer great views of Portage Glacier but now you have to take the cruise to see the glacier. Inside the center are interpretive displays of wildlife and an excellent movie. All this can be seen for a nominal fee or if you have a park pass it is FREE.

Alaska’s Seward Highway climbs over mountain passes where you’re surrounded by jaw-dropping views of jagged peaks, rain forests, crystal lakes and the Pacific Ocean—this highway is a photographer’s dream. Potter Marsh marks the end of city views and the beginning of wilderness—it is truly a birder’s paradise. While driving along this road, we stop at several stops with ample time to take in the breathtaking views.
Beluga Point
Popular photo stop with panoramic views of Turnagain Arm. Possible opportunities to see Dall sheep and Beluga whales. Beluga whales are often sited during later part of July through August when the salmon are spawning in the area streams.
Portage Valley
Enjoy breathtaking views of Explorer Glacier which overlooks a serene lake. Then it is on to the next stop for a 10 minute walk into a rainforest that leads to an overlook looking down on Portage Lake and its many glaciers that surround it. On the way back sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Take the time to read up on all that Girdwood has to offer if you get to Girdwood and want visitor information visit the Tourist Trap when you get off the shuttle. You can also go into the Alyeska Resort where the concierge desk is always happy to book you on any of the activities available in Girdwood. There is so much to see in do in Girdwood that we encourage you to do your homework.
